Chalice Mining’s short selling interest surges to new peak following Mitsubishi memorandum of understanding

The heat is being dialled up on Chalice Mining as short sellers latch onto investor disappointment at the progress being made to bring a huge green metals mine in Toodyay to life. The latest data from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, which has a lag of four trading days, shows the percentage of Chalice’s stock in the hands of shorters leapt from 9.5 per cent to 11.9 per cent between Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Short selling is a practice where traders, usually large institutions, aim to profit from a decrease in the price of a stock. Chalice now has the third highest level of shorting interest among ASX-listed companies, overtaking Liontown Resources, and the only mining player behind long-time holder of the unwanted mantle as the bourse’s most short sold stock — Pilbara Minerals. Last Wednesday morning Chalice signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi that could potentially lead to a binding partnership or joint venture down the track to develop Chalice’s Gonneville nickel-copper-platinum group elements discovery. The multi-commodity Gonneville project that sits on farmland in the vicinity of Toodyay will set Chalice back as much as $2.3 billion to develop, according to the company’s current estimates. But some shareholders were clearly hoping for a binding deal or Mitsubishi to stump up some cash for the ongoing Gonneville pre-feasibility study. Chalice’s share price shed 19.7 per cent last Wednesday following the MOU news. Chalice managing director Alex Dorsch conceded the market had expectations of a “more definitive transaction” but he was confident the MOU marked the start of a “long-term relationship” between Chalice and Mitsubishi. “Given where the project is in terms of the early stage studies, and also the way Japanese trading houses like Mitsubishi behave, they typically do MOU type framework agreements initially, which then lead into more definitive transactions over time,” he told The West Australian last week. Chalice’s short sold percentage was only 1.8 per cent 11 months ago, but a scoping study that underwhelmed the market plus price headwinds for key Gonneville commodities, like nickel, has fuelled a short selling assault and a near 80 per cent share price decline. The Gonneville pre-feasibility study is slated to be finished by the middle of next year. If and when operational, Gonneville promises to deliver 470,000 ounces of palladium, platinum and gold per year, and about 16,000 tonnes of nickel and 16,000 tonnes of copper over 18 years. Construction is expected to start in 2027 and create about 1200 jobs. Chalice declined to comment.
