Dumbleyung incident: Man shot after police officer assaulted responding to family violence incident

A man has been shot after assaulting a police officer during a violent altercation on Saturday. The incident unfolded about 12.30am when police were called to a family violence incident on Harvey Street in Dumbleyung, about 90km southeast of Narrogin. Police separated a man and a woman believed to have been involved in the altercation upon arrival to the scene. As police continued their inquiries at the home a male officer was physically assaulted, leaving him with a laceration to the head. It prompted police to shoot a man in his 30s. He suffered non-fatal injuries and was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment. The police officer was sent to Narrogin Hospital for treatment of his head injury. Major crime detectives, overseen by the internal affairs unit, are investigating the incident. Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson said early indications were that police had acted properly. “While the matter is under investigation at the moment, I understand the Police Commissioner has today viewed the body worn camera footage and it seems that proper procedures were followed by the police officers,” he told reporters. “However, as I said, it’s under investigation at the moment.” 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732)
