City of Greater Geraldton urges community to be safe around discarded needles, denies increased reports

The City of Greater Geraldton says it has not received an increase in reports of discarded syringes, despite enquiries about increased online reports emerging. It was reported there had been more posts on social media about needles being left in the community. However, chief executive Ross McKim said the city was not aware of increased concerns. “The city has not had any recent reported increase of discarded syringes,” he said. “City staff are trained in safe handling and disposal of needles/syringes and regularly inspect open space areas for discarded needles/syringes.” In 2022, the city received funding from the WA Local Government Association’s community sharps program to better contain needles and help reduce incidents of vandalism. Mr McKim urged the community to dispose of needles correctly. The city said discarded needles and syringes could be disposed of by members of the community, provided they followed recommendations from the Department of Health. However, those who don’t feel comfortable discarding the objects themselves can contact the city to arrange collection and disposal.
