Suiside made a powerful statement in the men’s top division in the second round of the Geraldton softball season over the weekend, defeating reigning champions Rams 22-2.

This was a stunning reversal of last season’s grand final, with Suiside dominating from start to finish, thanks in part to the return of players from the under-23 State competition.

Suiside coach Murray Connell was pleased with the team’s results.

“Always good to start off the season with a win and execute the fundamentals,” he said.

In another thrilling men’s division 1 match, Martians narrowly edged out Batavia Blaze 5-4.

The game was tightly contested until Nic Valenti delivered a crucial hit over the fence, bringing in three runs and securing the win for Martians.

In women’s division 1 games, Martians continued their strong form with a commanding 24-10 win over Suiside. Despite a solid effort from Suiside’s batters, they struggled without their regular pitcher, who was sidelined due to illness.

The replacement pitchers gave away numerous walks, allowing Martians to take control of the game.

Meanwhile, Marlins claimed a 5-1 victory over Pi’s Panthers in the other division 1 game. Taryn Purcell put in a stellar performance on the mound for Marlins, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run while striking out two.

Ava Gould impressed at the plate with three hits and two stolen bases, while Purcell, Jamiee Davies and Kara Taylor each drove in runs. Marlins’ defence was flawless, with no errors and a key double play.

In men’s division 2 action, Batavia Blaze overwhelmed Marlins in a dominant 28-1 victory. Batavia’s offence was relentless, with Owen Scatena and Joseph Heta leading the charge.

Heta’s inside-the-park home run was a highlight of the game, as Batavia Blaze racked up 21 hits and stole 14 bases. Marlins struggled to contain their aggressive play, leading to the one-sided result.

Martians Black also secured a convincing win, defeating Pi’s Panthers 22-2. Luke Hennighan’s impressive pitching performance helped Martians control the game, while Rod Baker stood out for Pi’s with his strong batting in what has been a tough start for the new club.

In another high-scoring affair, Martians Red defeated Gunduwa 20-14. Martians took an early lead with an 11-run second inning, powered by four home runs.

Daniel Leggett shone with a home run, triple and single, while Kynan Leggett added two home runs and pitched effectively.

Despite Gunduwa’s efforts, including strong performances from Beau Simpson and Kobe Simpson, Martians’ offensive firepower proved too much.

In a shock one-sided affair, Suiside defeated a weakened Rams Blue team 45-0.

In women’s second division, Batavia Blaze cruised to a 29-7 win over Martians, capitalising on pitching errors and multiple walks. Alyssa Piper led Batavia with two singles and two catches, while Bec Armstrong was Martians’ standout performer with a single and a catch.

Rams Blue played a close game against Gunduwa with both sides not giving too much away early in the game.
