$7 million Railside Park project officially opens in Waroona as community gets first look at community space

Waroona’s new $7 million community precinct has officially opened as the council prepares to welcome the public into the facility. There was much fanfare at Railside Park on December 12 as elected members, dignitaries and guests gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Shire president Mike Walmsley described the park as a demonstration of the dedication of many and the resilience of the town. “(It is) a vision for a future that bridges the gap between our past, present and the potential that lies ahead,” he said. Cr Walmsley said the project would have not occured without the immense support of past and present councillors, as well as shire staff. “Railside Park is intended to be the anchor to drive investment and improvement in Waroona, as well as an opportunity to grow social capital in our town,” he said. “It will enhance vibrancy for both residents and visitors, and importantly provide an area where we’ll have multiple uses and activities.” The park is set to be the new heart of the town, consisting of the Noongar Maar-keny Bonar six season gardens, the Skatewave Skatepark, a BMX track, rural-themed playground and grassed area. A few familiar parts of town now have a new home, with the town’s war memorial and the blue couch being relocated within the precinct. Among those in attendance for the opening were Regional Development Minister Don Punch, Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke, Canning MHR Andrew Hastie and WA senator Louise Pratt. The name of the park pays homage to the town’s development as a result of the Perth to Picton railway, alongside a nod to skaters who will use the rail on skate equipment at the park to perform tricks. There are still some final works to be done on the project, but the construction fencing will be taken down this week. A twilight community celebration is planned for February 2 once all works are completed. The development has been funded by the Federal Government, State Government departments and agencies, the Shire of Waroona, the Alcoa Waroona Sustainability Fund and the Lions Club of Waroona.
