The State’s biggest producer of alumina has opened the door to applicants for its 12-month traineeship program in Peel and the South West.

Alcoa Australia are welcoming applicants for their traineeship program at its Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines starting in February 2025.

Successful applicants will take part in the nationally certified traineeship, involving TAFE education and practical tests to expand their career options, and end up with a Certificate II in Surface Extraction.

Current trainee Ashleigh Newall said she was enjoying the opportunities working at Willowdale mine.

“I’m really loving the traineeship,” she said.

“Especially learning how to operate the new haul trucks on site and working with different teams to understand the business better, with the goal of hopefully securing a full-time position.

“Being new to mining, I’ve found this position has helped me grow personally, with everyone so supportive and friendly.”

Fellow trainee Tahj Taylor said the best part of the traineeship had been working with a range of individuals and taking on different challenges every day.

“Obtaining my heavy rigid licence to operate trucks on-site has been my greatest achievement so far,” he said.

Applications close October 22 and can be found at Alcoa’s Entry Talent Program webpage.
