Best birds flock to Waroona

HUNDREDS of the best looking birds in the South West will flock to the Waroona Showgrounds on Sunday, June 11 for the annual Young Bird Show.

Poultry under 12 months old can be entered in the show, which attracted 260 entries last year, and water fowl will be the feature breed.

Waroona Poultry Club president Laurie Snell said membership of the club had grown since its founding four years ago and now stretched up to Baldivis.

Ms Snell said Waroona worked closely with the Harvey Poultry Club with whom they shared the event.

Ms Snell said there was a growing number of households keeping chickens out the back, particularly the heritage breeds.

“I think backyard breeds, particularly heritage breeds, are becoming more and more popular,” she said.

York poultry judge Jim Fuller will check each fowl not just on their carriage, colour and feathers but their eyes and even breast bone shape.

“Just about everything on them has to be judged,” Ms Snell said.

Entries for the Young Bird Show need to be in by June 6 by emailing lrsnll5@gmail.com.
