A pair of castaways, minions armed with water guns and a boat shaped like a bunny were just some of the strange sights on show at Harvey’s swimming pool this weekend.
The Dr Peter Topham Memorial Swimming Pool was the stage of the Rotary Club of Harvey’s first ever Rotary Recycling Regatta which saw the community’s greatest crafters taking to the water in boats made from nothing but tape and containers.
The event drew in teams from across the region with the Men’s Shed, Agricultural School and Harvey Community Radio all competing alongside several community members.
Harvey Rotary Club President Robyn Coleman said the day was the “most fabulous” community day.
“We’ve had competitors here from six years of age through to well over 70,” she said.
Mrs Coleman said starting up new events had challenges but she was thrilled with the turnout with one family even traveling from as far as Dunsborough to take apart in the event.
She said she had people calling her prior to the event unsure about their ability to crate a raft saying they would watch this year to learn about the event.
“Next year will be even bigger and better — we’ve got commitments of 12 crafts for the next year already,” she said.
“I’m expecting it to be at least double, probably triple the size.”
Mrs Coleman said she could not pick out a personal favourite with so much effort from all entries.
“Seeing the little kids, their parents and the grandparents here today, all having fun, that’s what it’s all about,” she said.
