Drink-drivers concern police

Harvey police say they are disappointed after charging several drink-drivers in the past two weeks, including a driver with an alleged blood alcohol reading more than four times the legal limit.

About 9.45pm on May 12, police stopped a vehicle on Young Street in Harvey and breathalysed the driver, who allegedly gave a reading of 0.231.

A 37-year-old Harvey woman was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and will appear in Harvey Magistrate’s Court later this month.

Just before 1am on May 10, a 23-year-old Harvey man was charged with driving in excess of 0.05.

About 4.30pm on May 26 officers performed a routine traffic stop on a vehicle on South Western Highway near Wokalup.

Police breathalysed the driver of the vehicle, who allegedly blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.088

A 52-year-old woman from Withers will appear in Harvey Magistrates Court in July.

Just after midnight on May 19, police officers stopped a vehicle travelling on South Western Highway near Waroona.

The driver, a 16-year-old girl from Waroona, allegedly gave an alcohol reading of 0.027.

Police charged the girl with driving in excess of 0.02 and no authority to drive.

She will appear in Harvey Children’s Court in July.

“It is disappointing to see people driving over the limit and very concerning that one gave a reading of 0.231 when the limit is 0.05,” Harvey police Sgt Scott Gillis said.

“All but one were issued disqualification notices so were suspended from driving immediately.”

Sgt Gillis urged motorists to be aware of the risks when they get behind the wheel.

“People must take responsibility for the safety of themselves and everyone else on the road,” he said.

“There is no excuse for drink-driving, but it can result in a lifetime of hurt.”
