A new project has been launched at Harvey Senior High School, just in time to bring some festive cheer within the community.

The school has been running an empowerment program over the last semester for girls in Years 7 to 9.

School Chaplain Kristi Crognale said the project has been an important addition for the students.

“The programs are run in small groups and the initiatives are centred on ‘self awareness’ and positive outcomes that can come in life when you understand ‘who you are and your abilities’,” she said.

“Part of the program has involved the girls focusing on something they can do for someone else or volunteering in the community.”

With the holiday period approaching, the empowerment program students have fundraised to purchase presents for those less fortunate.

The beautifully wrapped gifts were handed over to chaplains at Harvey and Yarloop primary schools to be distributed in time for Christmas.

Ms Crognale highlighted the benefits to the students of their endeavours.

“The girls had a great time preparing these presents and it is yet another act of kindness from one community member to another,” she said.

“We hope that Harvey Senior High School can assist further in our local community in ways that bring about a sense of belonging for our children and their families.”
