A session on using online genealogy tools is set to be held in Harvey this month as part of a national initiative.

The Harvey Community Resource Centre will hold a Branches and Brews event on October 19 as its contribution to Get Online Week, an Australia-wide campaign promoting digital inclusivity.

Aimed at residents aged 50 years and over, eventgoers will learn how to research their family tree using online resources alongside seeing the services the centre offers.

CRC chair Anne Haylock said the centre was passionate about bridging the digital skills gap, especially for older people.

“Having hobbies is important for mental health and an online hobby can open up a whole new world once people feel confident and safe enough to get online,” he said.

The centre is one of 500 community organisations country-wide holding free events to mark the week, which reaches more than 15,000 people nationally.

Good Things Foundation Australia chief executive Jess Wilson said digital skills are just as important today as access to food, housing and education.

“The local events that happen throughout the week reach people in need of digital support, who may otherwise get left behind,” she said.

“Receiving digital skills support empowers people to feel confident and safe when connecting online with loved ones, shopping online or digitally applying for their new dream job.”
