As judgement day for Tidy Towns WA awards approaches, community members are calling out for help to keep Waroona waste free.

The town of Waroona entered the Keep Australia Beautiful Council’s Tidy Towns Awards earlier this year and residents have been hard at work getting the town tidy since then.

With judges arriving in Waroona on September 20, Waroona’s Magicbarn owner Annette Kent said she hoped to hit the town with other community members in the coming weeks to put on the final touches.

Mrs Kent initially entered Waroona into the competition and since then has hosted clean-up days in town from Railside Park to Drakesbrook Weir.

Many businesses have also partnered with Cameron Collects for Containers for Change, having 10 cent bins installed around the town at several storefronts with both the Waroona District High School and St Joseph’s School also starting their own can collections.

Mrs Kent said there were several categories the town could excel at.

She said with Troutfest and the Waroona Redfin challenge set to hit Drakesbrook Weir this month, they especially want the weir spotless for the judges and visitors coming to town.

“When we did the first clean up a couple of months ago we picked up probably 20 bags of rubbish,” Mrs Kent said.

“When we went up the other night, we only filled four, so there’s already a big difference.”

Mrs Kent said she they would be running a few more clean-up days in the coming weeks to prepare for the judges’ arrival.

“Waroona has always been a pretty tidy town, but since starting this it’s raised more awareness, and the Containers for Change makes a big difference too,” she said.

“We’re already thinking about next year — every year from now on and — hopefully we’ll get other towns up and down the South Western Highway involved too.”
