Get your fishing gear ready as the Waroona Redfin challenge is set to make a splash this month.

The event is being hosted by That Fishing Shop in Waroona, starting on September 21 and running through to September 23, with more than $7000 in prizes up for grabs.

From September 20, the shop will be handing out free key tags for anyone to enter with owners Michelle and Glen Field hoping t o draw newcomers to the region.

“If you get a special key, you might just get a $300 fishing rod before you even catch a fish,” Mrs Field said.

“So even if you don’t catch a fish, you still have a chance to win a prize.”

While the fish don’t need to be caught in Waroona, they will need to be weighed at the shop over the weekend to win prizes.

This is the second time the shop has run a Redfin Challenge, with an impromptu event taking place over the long weekend back in June.

A raffle will also be open to anyone who had shopped in town by supplying a receipt into the draw.

“We are hoping to get everyone that comes to town spending money in town,” Mrs Field said.

“We will put the receipts into a raffle and have a prize pack filled with prizes from around town, which we are going to contribute $500 to.”

Mr Field said redfin are identified as pest species in WA, so the challenge will not only be an enjoyable activity for the long weekend, but promote conservation for the region.

“They are pretty easy to catch too,” he said.

“You get people with all this specialist gear trying to catch them and a six-year-old with a $5 Kmart rod can catch a bigger fish.”

A fishing licence is required for freshwater fishing in the South West.
