One-in-a-million shot scores Harvey basketball prodigy BHP Streamer Screamer win

One second left on the clock. The ball is in his hands, his team two points down and he’s halfway down the court.

Despite the pressure building, 10-year-old Conan Newton takes his shot as the siren ends the game.

The ball sinks into the net, a three-pointer. The crowd explodes and Harvey’s rising basketball star secures the championship for his team.

Lucky for Newton, who scored the shot not many would believe, the moment was captured by a family member from the opposing team, and has since won the 2024 BHP Streamer Screamer competition winning the him and his club a $10,000 prize.

“I didn’t think much about the shot, I didn’t think we were going to win,” he said.

“I was about to start crying, but then I looked up at the scoreboard and saw we had won, by a single point.

“I didn’t believe it.”

The moment could prove to be just the start of an illustrious career, with the young player hoping to one day reach NBA heights.

He’s been playing since he was six-years-old at the Harvey Basketball Association and is involved with the Southwest Slammers as well as playing in Australind.

His father Collin Newton was his coach at the time.

As a dad and as a coach, he was “absolutely stunned”.

“It was something you would never dream of — on a grand final day in a small town, that’s as high as the stakes get,” he said.

“For your son, and one of the players, to pull something like that off, it’s just mind-blowing. It made me question reality for several days after.”

Harvey Heat competition administrator David Beech said the additional funds would help the club purchase new bibs, balls and training equipment.

He said he could hardly believe his eyes on that fateful day.

“It was literally a one-in-a-million shot,” he said.

“And for a 10-year-old at the time to pull that off was just staggering.”
