Shire of Harvey updates five-year plan set to tackle crime, introduce better CCTV and keep community safe

Installing a better CCTV network, strengthening ties with police and improving lighting on the streets are among measures the Shire of Harvey is aiming to roll out over the next five years as part of a multi-agency plan to tackle crime and keep the community safe. Councillors last week endorsed the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan, which details priority projects and objectives to lower offending in the South West town. Among the main goals outlined in the document was installing an efficient CCTV network that would ensure cameras are in place and appropriately located at community facilities. It comes after residents singled out CCTV as the most important measure to improve safety during a community survey. Investigating an improved lighting system throughout the shire was listed as a top objective in the plan and also as a high concern in the community. Strengthening relationships with police and stakeholders, reducing opportunities for crime through urban design and increasing education around emergency readiness, road safety and public health were among the other key objectives in the document. Shire president Paul Gillett said the aim of the plan was to guide initiatives to reduce the incidences of criminal opportunities and enhance community safety and lifestyle. Community consultation also showed 50 per cent of shire residents felt safe, 34.7 per cent felt fairly safe and 7.4 per cent felt unsafe in their area. WA Police crime statistics reveal the top reported offences in the Shire from 2019 to 2020 were drug offences, theft, assault and property damage. Initially adopted in May 2017, the plan was due to be updated last year, but had to be rescheduled due to COVID-19. “The Shire’s existing community safety and crime prevention plan was due for a full review, this review process ensures that the plan remains relevant and reflects community priorities,” Mr Gillett said. The Shire engaged with police, the community and members of the plan’s advisory group before compiling the final document.
