Students take on the best in skills test

Three students from Harvey Senior High School competed in the regional World Skills Australia Competition on Friday.

Year 11 students Russell Peake, Ella Morgan and Will Eckles joined hundreds of other young tradespeople at the South Regional TAFE Bunbury Campus to test their skills and compete against each other.

Several competitions ran on the day including bricklaying, hairdressing, construction and hospitality.

Currently undertaking a bricklaying course at TAFE, Russell competed against students in a bricklaying contest.

The 16-year-old enjoys the hard work that comes with bricklaying and said the World Skills Competition was a great way for him to get his name out there.

“I nominated myself for this competition because it seemed like a good way for me to get my foot in the door,” Russell said.

“Whether or not I win, I can say I’ve entered and include it on my resume which will help me in the future.”

Ella Morgan was another Harvey Senior High School student who took part in the competition where her hospitality skills were put to the test.

“The hospitality course I am currently enrolled in gives me a good amount of job opportunities, by the end of it I will have my barista certificate and RSA,” she said. “I decided to take part in this competition because I thought it would add to my current experience.”
