Meals on Wheels is calling for volunteers to help deliver food to elderly and vulnerable people in Harvey.

Harvey senior citizens president Brian Kealley said while volunteers were important all the time, they were “especially important in tough times like this”.

“Many of our volunteers are in the vulnerable group of people and are unable to continue volunteering during this time,” Mr Kealley said.

“We are fortunate that many of our remaining volunteers have offered to do extra shifts and we are thankful to the Harvey Shire Council who are letting their staff help us to prepare meals.”

However, Mr Kealley said the branch still needed more people to put up their hands.

Pat and Don Walton are some of the weekly Meals on Wheels volunteers in Harvey.

“Now that we are retired, we have a lot of time to help others,” Mrs Walton said.

“It is no big deal, we just really enjoy helping out.”

Mrs Walton said volunteering could be a “real eye-opener” and encouraged young people to give it a go.

Harvey resident Betty Flavel is one of the people Mr and Mrs Walton visit on their meal drives.

Mrs Flavel said she loved seeing Mr and Mrs Walton at her door.

“I would not know what to do without them,” she said.

The 90-year-old woman said she was having to take precautions to make sure she was social distancing. “We have great chats every time but I am definitely missing my hugs.”
