Waroona community’s push to be a tidy town has container-collecting icon up for Statewide award
A South West community’s push to be a tidy town has a container-collecting icon up for a Statewide award.
Waroona is a finalist in this year’s Tidy Towns awards for residents’ ongoing work with Peel container collecting icon Cameron Collects.
Cameron Danzi is the man behind the container collections service widely adopted in the town, who has joined several businesses around Waroona in the push to get the town tidy.
His efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Waroona now up for as a finalist in the containers for change category.
Living with a disability, Cameron’s family are always by his side ready to help with his many pick-ups though the week. His mother Jane said she and Cameron were both immensely proud of what has been achieved in Waroona.
“It is exciting to see businesses caring about their town and taking positive action to keep Waroona tidy,” she said.
“It’s also exciting to see businesses leading by example and supporting disability employment.
“The more businesses think outside the box and welcome people living with disabilities into their workplaces, the more opportunities can be created for employment and thus improved living for those with disabilities like Cameron.”
Waroona’s Annette Kent initially entered the town into the competition and said it was fantastic to have the whole town getting behind the project.
“You don’t see any containers on the road verges when you enter or leave Waroona now,” she said.
“It’s made a really big difference, the town looks really neat.”
Waroona shire president Mike Walmsley said it was lovely to have the town recognised for its efforts and the accolade was a true reflection on Cameron and the community.
“I wish him all the best and hopefully he can bring home the bacon, which will be really nice also for the town,” he said.
Cameron and his parents will be representing Waroona at the awards presentation on November 29.
Mrs Danzi congratulated the town for getting behind the movement.
“It is exciting to see Waroona named as a finalist in the community containers for change category,” she said.
“Thank you for supporting Cameron Collects and all the groups and individuals who have worked hard collecting drink containers to keep Waroona tidy in 2024.”
