Yarloop police sergeant to ride in 125km cross country mountain bike race raising funds for Police Legacy WA

One of Yarloop’s top cops will soon take part in a gruelling 125km cross country mountain bike race to raise funds for Police Legacy WA. Yarloop Officer in Charge and avid mountain bike rider Sergeant Wayne Byram will join close to 1000 other entrants in a 10-hour mountain bike race through the hills of Nannup, Bridgetown and Donnybrook. No stranger to endurance training, Yarloop’s OIC has taken part in a number of triathlons, ultra-marathons and mountain bike races, is a member of the WA Police Sports Federation and said he was excited to get this next challenge under way. “I’m currently doing about 150km a week and by then end of April it’ll be 250km a week,” he said. “It’s just about preparation, sometimes trying to find the motivation to get up and train is not always easy but doing it for a charity as worthy as Police Legacy WA — it really does give me the extra G-up to get up and get active.” The ride raises funds for Police Legacy WA — a charity that provides support for police widows and their children — which, Sgt Byram said, was something he was “very strongly” connected to. “It’s absolutely invaluable, I’ve been on three Legacy camps and you see how the money is spent on these young people, it’s truly incredible and I’m honoured to be a part of Police Legacy WA,” he said. Having started a Go Fund Me page, Sgt Byram has managed to raise more than $800 in a matter of days and hopes to blow his goal of $3000 “out of the water”. “I think that was quite a conservative estimate and I think if I can raise $800 in five days I’m looking to just raise as much as I can,” he said. Sgt Byram said he has had incredible support from the Harvey and Yarloop communities for the May 15 ride and each riders is given 10 hours to complete the extreme hill climb.
