Rosie Batty says she feels angry, frustrated and sickened by Floreat domestic violence killings

Domestic violence prevention campaigner Rosie Batty says she feels “incredibly angry”, “frustrated” and “sickened” by the circumstances surrounding the Floreat domestic violence killings. The former Australian of the Year said the time had come for Australia to work together “cohesively” to stamp out domestic violence once and for all. Jennifer and Gretl Petelczyc were shot dead by Mark Bombara after he turned up at their Berkeley Crescent residence last Friday afternoon looking for his ex-wife. When he couldn’t find her, he shot Jennifer and Gretl dead before turning the gun on himself. It soon transpired Jennifer was best friends with Bombara’s former spouse. In an exclusive interview with The West Australian this week Ms Batty – whose son Luke was murdered in a horrendous act of domestic violence in 2014 - said she was left feeling a wave of emotions following the murders. Coupled with allegations police were warned “repeatedly” by Bombara’s daughter Ariel about the “imminent” threat her father posed weeks before Friday’s horrific shooting, Ms Batty said she was horrified by the events that unfolded. “To be murdered in cold blood because of who they (the Petelczyc’s) were, is another level of cruelty and horror,” Ms Batty told The West. “Just the senseless of it and the pure meanness of such an act.” But Ms Batty said hearing Ariel’s version of events – which are now the subject of an internal police investigation - both saddened and angered her. “What deeply saddened me but made me incredibly angry was how hard we still have to work to convince police of the fear we have,” Ms Batty said. “We should not have to work this hard for police to be taking our risks seriously. “And I think that really angers me, that we are still having to work so hard to convince police that we feel unsafe. “I just feel incredulous that we are still having to do that, after all these decades of awareness raising. “What do we have to do for police to take our fears seriously? “That for me, just sickened me really. Ms Batty said solving domestic and family violence was a complex issue. She said limiting access to guns was just one issue that needed addressing. “We’ve had a horrendous year so far with family violence fatalities,” she said. “It makes sense to me that gun laws and access to guns … it makes sense to closely examine them. “(But) there are many many different areas that need to work more cohesively together for it to improve.” Ms Batty was instrumental in setting up Australia’s first Royal Commission into family violence. Last year, the Victorian Government announced the implementation of the commission’s final and 227th recommendation. Ms Batty stopped short of saying the WA Government should set up its own Royal Commission into family violence. But she said the commission had led to major reforms in Victoria. “I am not saying they (the WA Government) should have a Royal Commission,” she said. “We still haven’t got the perfect system, but we are a long way ahead of every other State.”
