Sean Wood: The first person to be convicted of rape in WA using DNA technology denied parole

The first person to be convicted of rape in WA using DNA technology will remain behind bars for the rest of this year after he was knocked back for parole. Serial sex offender Sean Wood became known as the “DNA rapist” when he was jailed in 1990 after his DNA was linked to the 1989 rape of a Perth teenager. The case, which had the help of the FBI, was a huge breakthrough at the time because it was the first occasion WA Police had used DNA technology to identify a rapist. But jail time for that offence did not deter Wood from carrying our further sex crimes on other young women and children. Wood found himself back in WA District Court in 2019 on seven charges, three of which related to a shocking sex attack on a 15-year-old girl who was walking through Mt Lawley in 2017. The four other charges Wood faced were child sex offences stemming from another young victim whom he offended against in 2019. Wood was ultimately jailed for six years for both offences and his suitability for parole was recently considered by the WA Prisoners Review Board. In a statement the board confirmed Wood was denied parole because he still presented an “unacceptable risk” to the community. He will not be considered for parole again for another six months. Wood’s former partner previously said she was gravely concerned about the six year jail term, labelling it disgraceful. Speaking to The West Australian this week, the woman said she was relieved Wood had been refused parole. “The victims have been through enough trauma,” she said. “The longer he stays in custody, I hope, the more piece of mind they have.” Then District Court Chief Judge Kevin Sleight — who jailed Wood in 2019 — noted at the time the rapist had “deviant sexual preferences.” Among the charges Wood admitted to in 2019 were sexual penetration of a child, indecent dealing with a child, threats to kill and deprivation of liberty. The court heard at the time how Wood grabbed the 15-year-old victim in Mt Lawley as she walked along Clifton Crescent on the morning of August 19, 2017. Wood ran up behind the girl, put his hand over her face, threatened to kill her if she screamed and dragged her towards his car which was left running nearby. The girl managed to break free and ran to get help. It wasn’t until almost two years after the offence that Wood was arrested and charged, after his DNA was found on the victim’s clothing.
