Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney tells WA government to make child protection a top priority

Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney has put the WA government on notice that it must make fixing child protection services a top priority in the wake of a 10-year-old boy taking his own life while in the care system. The federal minister has spoken with WA’s Child Protection Minister Sabine Winton about the case, which she said was a “tragic, sad situation”. “There has to be absolute attention when a child this young dies because they have taken their own life and that child is in out-of-home care,” Ms Burney told ABC radio on Tuesday. “That means we have to re-double our efforts on issues of prevention and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. “I’ve certainly made it very clear in my discussions with the minister that it is so important.” The WA Government last week did not answer factual questions about the boy’s situation such as when he came into care. A coronial inquest will examine the boy’s death, with Premier Roger Cook indicating he would back having the timeframe of that sped up to get important answers. Ms Burney said the recommendations from that inquest “have to be looked at extraordinarily carefully” by governments. “The suicide of this little boy is such a confronting issue for everyone. There has to be a real look at prevention not, as I say, the edge of the cliff,” she said, adding that more measures were needed for “supporting families that are starting to unravel”. The Federal Government has created a position for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Commissioner, which Ms Burney said would be appointed to start work on July 1. It has also funded almost 100 new child protection workers in Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, set up a trial of a youth suicide prevention program in 12 communities, and is mandating health checks, including of mental health, for children in out-of-home care. State governments have also committed to creating separate Indigenous children’s commissioner roles as part of signing up to the latest child safety action plan, however, WA is yet to act on this.
