Michael Voss leads tributes as former Brisbane teammate Aaron Shattock fights for life in hospital
Carlton coach Michael Voss has led a chorus of tributes to former Brisbane teammate Aaron Shattock, who is fighting for life after being crushed by an excavator.
The 44-year-old was driving the digger on the Gold Coast on Sunday when it rolled, trapping him underneath.
Emergency services had to use the hydraulic rescue tool, also known as the jaws of life, to free the former AFL player.
He remains in an induced coma at Gold Coast University Hospital, surrounded by his family, including wife Claire and their three children.
The accident has shocked the AFL community with tributes pouring in.
Voss, who captained Shattock at the Lions and played together in the 2002 premiership, described his former teammate as “a ripping good fella”.
“I can’t believe it … it’s terrible at any time but just before Christmas is even worse. Our prayers are with him and his family,” he added.
Labrador Football Club, where Shattock is a life member after playing and coaching the senior side, released a statement on Sunday.
“On behalf of the Labrador Australian Football Club, we send our thoughts, love, and prayers to the Shattock family during this challenging time,” it said.
“‘Shatts’ is dearly loved by his family, friends, and the entire Labrador community. A true Labrador person and life member, Aaron has been a significant part of our club since 2007 - as a player, assistant coach, senior coach, and committee member.
“His passion for our club is unmatched, and his presence is deeply valued
“Our thoughts are with Aaron’s family, and we kindly ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Politician Cameron Caldwell MP also posted a tribute on social media: “Aaron Shattock is dedicated to his family, his footy and the Labrador Tigers and we were all shocked to hear news of his accident yesterday and the injuries he has sustained.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Shatts for a full and speedy recovery and with his family during this time.”
Shattock retired in 2006 after playing 68 games for Brisbane and Port Adelaide.
He started on the bench for the Lions in the famous 2002 decider when they beat Collingwood by nine points.
The midfielder’s time at Brisbane finished in 2004, after which he moved to the Power where he added another 11 games to the 57 he played at the Lions.
He then moved to Queensland to play for Labrador, where he spent a year.
