Super League to follow NRL 'captain's challenge' lead
Rugby league chiefs have confirmed that a 'captain's challenge' will be introduced for all Super League matches and other major televised games in Britain from next season.
The rule was one of four passed at the RFL's annual board meeting in Salford on Wednesday, bringing the northern hemisphere game in line with the NRL, where captains having the right to refer an official's on-field decision to the video referee has been a regular feature for some time.
Under the new RFL ruling, captains will only be allowed one unsuccessful challenge in each fixture.
A captain will have 10 seconds from when the referee makes the decision to challenge it, but it can only be used in instances when the whistle is blown and play is stopped.
Rulings involving suspected forward passes and infringements in the ruck cannot be subject to the 'captain's challenge'.
In addition, the RFL board voted to maintain the elite game's current tackle height rules, rather than a prospective shift to below armpit height for 2025.
The RFL said the amendment "follows a significant reduction in concussive and sub-concussive events in the Super League in 2024, measured by the widespread use of instrumented mouthguards".
