West Australian teenager Iona Anderson has finished fourth in the women’s 100m backstroke final at the world short course swimming championships in Budapest.

Anderson, 19, finished in 56.08sec, 1.53 seconds behind American Regan Smith.

Smith, winner of five medals at the Paris Olympics, clocked a championship record time of 54.55 to win ahead of US teammate Katharine Berkoff (54.93) and Canada’s Ingrid Wilm (55.75).

Anderson also teamed with fellow West Australian Josh Yong, as well as Matt Temple and Meg Harris, to record a Oceania record time of 1min37.77sec in their heat to reach the final of the mixed 4x50m medley relay. The final was to be raced overnight.

Anderson will swim the 200m backstroke on Sunday afternoon, with relay berths also on offer.

Anderson, a silver and bronze relay medallist in Paris along with a fifth in the final of the 100m backstroke, will swim in the 200m backstroke in Budapest on Sunday afternoon.

She was a gold relay medallist and dual individual silver medallist at the world long course championships earlier this year in Doha.

Yong also qualified for the semifinals of the 100m breaststroke, to be raced overnight, and will enter the heats of the 200m breaststroke late on Friday afternoon.

He qualified for both the 100m and 200m individual breaststroke in Paris, reaching the 200m final where he finished eighth.

Like Anderson, Yong, 23, has a cramped schedule in the FINA 25-metre championships, which produced seven world records on day one.

Yong was a member of the 4x100m medley team that set a world record of 3 minutes, 18.98 seconds the last time the short course championships were held in 2022. They will open their defence with heat swims on Saturday night.

Yong was also a bronze medallist in the 4x100m medley relay in this year’s Paris Olympics.
