Live export: Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry probe after 80 sheep die during live export

More than 80 sheep have died in a plane bound for Jakarta in a live export shipment. The Australian Livestock Exporters Council confirmed the breeding sheep died on Saturday night during a small air freight shipment which departed from Sydney. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry could not confirm whether any of the sheep on board were from Western Australia but said they were investigating the incident. The death comes after the recent legislative ban on the live sheep export trade which will apply from May 2028. The recent changes in legislation will not stop sheep being exported by air.
