Dan Spasojevic’s passion for business led him to start a successful cleaning service business.

THE JOB

My job title is business owner/general manager of Halwest Property Services, a company that specialises in residential and commercial cleaning services across Australia. As a general manager, I am involved in the everyday operations of the business to ensure everything is running smoothly. This includes, but is not limited to, customer relations, marketing, and strategy.

THE PATH

I have always had a passion for business from a young age, mainly because I enjoyed being in the front seat of something that I created. This led me to opening a similar business as a teenager, which I would go on and sell several years later before starting Halwest Property Services.

I was 19 when I started my first business. It came about after living abroad for a few years and not really having any other job prospects in Australia that gave me the same satisfaction and motivation as having my own business. Starting a business in the cleaning industry was where luck met opportunity for me because I had a contact in the real estate industry who expressed the need for reliable end of lease and vacate cleaners. They were able to use my services and recommend me to others and it slowly grew from there.

I knew doing the cleaning myself was not going to be my strong suit from the start, as my mum would agree in those teenage years too. However, I was able to find contractors and a small number of casual employees who did the cleaning while I was busy creating marketing campaigns and getting the business name out there.

Halwest Property Services employs about 20 people today. This involves a mixture of contractors, casual and part time staff.

THE GOOD

Providing a service that others can rely on is truly rewarding and seeing something that you’ve created continually grow and evolve is very satisfying.

THE BAD

You never truly switch off as a business owner, which can certainly cause burnout if you don’t give yourself the time to relax and recover.

THE FUTURE

Jobs in the cleaning industry will always be in high demand and is an integral part in keeping Australia a healthier and safer place for everyone.
