Australia’s best supermarket Christmas ham revealed
Australia’s best Christmas ham has been revealed by a panel of taste testers.
The Christmas ham is a staple for Australians celebrating the holidays, with consumer group Choice banding together to test a range of hams available for sale at major Australian supermarkets.
Choice selected 10 Christmas hams sold at IGA, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, with a panel conducting a blind taste test to pick Australia’s best.
Taking out the top spot was the Seven Mile premium double smoked leg ham, available for sale at IGA.
The pane of local food show judge Fiona Mair, freelance food consultant Brigid Treloar and food and Easter show judge Jan Boon gave it a 79 per cent rating.
Priced at $12 per kilogram, the ham had a “smoky aroma” with a “pleasant, fairly balanced flavour”, the experts noted.
Clocking in at second was Aldi’s specially selected premium triple smoked half leg ham with a rating of 76 per cent.
A touch more expensive at $13.49, the ham was described as having “pleasant smokiness with a fairly balanced flavour that’s not too salty”.
The $8/kg IGA naturally smoked leg ham bone in fully cooked was also given a 76 per cent rating.
It was voted a “good everyday ham for Christmas” with a “pleasant saltiness that lingers” and “well-balanced flavour”.
The Woolworths half leg ham bone in was described as having a “mild and pleasant ham flavour with subtle smokiness and salty aftertaste”.
The ham is also priced at $8/kg and was given a 76 per cent rating.
The scores focus on a taste test, while 10 per cent is a nutrition score based on the health star rating.
The ratings have come in after the forecast for Christmas Day was revealed, with a warm day anticipated for most states.
