The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is once again available with the choice of a manual transmission, with the four-cylinder turbo-diesel workhorse now offering buyers of the in-demand workhorse a three-pedal setup.

When Toyota launched the four-cylinder LandCruiser 70 Series last year, it arrived as an automatic only, as the manual transmission was exclusive to 4.5-litre V8-powered versions – now unable to order and largely out of production.

However, alongside the announcement of the V8’s demise in July, Toyota announced the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel would gain a manual option, fitted with the same five-speed transmission as its outgoing V8 counterpart.

Manual-equipped LandCruiser 70 Series variants are $2000 less expensive than the automatic, however, the three-pedal option isn’t available for Single-cab/chassis utes or the Workmate Wagon.

Therefore, the 70 Series range continues to open at $75,600 plus on-roads, for the 76 Series WorkMate Wagon auto.

And despite sharing the same 150kW power output as the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel auto powertrain, manual versions have taken a torque hit, producing 450Nm rather than 500Nm. This is still more than six-speed manual Toyota HiLuxes with the same engine, which develop 420Nm.

Toyota says the five-speed manual transmission has unique gear ratios – with shorter first, second and third gears for better performance off the line – and has a flywheel compatible with a 12-inch clutch, plus a dust seal to prevent foreign matter entering the release bearing.

It’s also added a triple synchronisation mechanism to the first gear for smoother changes, while a longer fifth gear is intended to improve fuel economy and reduce noise at highway speeds.

However, the manual misses out on hill descent control and the front console box found in automatic versions.

Servicing and Warranty

The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, which can be extended to seven years forn the powertrain if you keep up with the scheduled services.

Maintenance is required every 10,000km or six months, whichever comes first.

The first 10 services each cost $525 for the automatic. Toyota is yet to confirm manual pricing, which is expected not to change as the old 4.5-litre V8 manual was priced at $525 for the first 10 visits.

Safety

The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is unrated by ANCAP, as its five-star rating based on testing conducted in 2016 lapsed after six years.
