Yarloop bowling club makes call for new players
A South West bowling club is calling out for new members as its teams struggle to stay competitive.
The Yarloop Bowling and Recreation Club is looking to fill out its roster to help stay competitive in South West competitions.
While always on the lookout for more social members, the current cohort is looking for more pennant players to take on the more serious side of the sport.
Club president Alan Poultney said the club only plays division D at the moment, but with so few on its roster, they play with a handicap each week.
“When we play a game of 21 ends, being down means the other team has a 42-bowl advantage,” he said.
“But we’re actually holding our own which is surprising. In short, we’re really struggling, but we’re not at the bottom.”
Mr Poultney said he would love to see the club take on some younger members, with bowls the only sport operating in town.
“I just want to see every kind in this town be given the chance to be sporty, because sport is the best thing in the world,” he said.
Club treasurer Jackie Bateup said the club had tried several times to generate interest in the club with new activities, but has not had huge success.
“I think it’s just the way of the times, and with Yarloop being a very small town it can be hard,” she said.
“But I just enjoy playing bowls, it’s playing a sport and meeting new people.”
