Harvey Senior High School students share stories with Japanese sister city Moka

Harvey Senior High School students have made friends in far away places and given Japan a look into the life of a country student after a first-time video call with the town’s sister city.

Four students met nine Japanese students over Zoom, asking questions, sharing information and explaining what life was like in their schools.

The nine students were from three junior high schools — Naganuma, Kugeta and Monobe — based in Harvey’s sister city, Moka.

HSHS media and art teacher Melissa Fry said the four Year 8 students hit the ground running and were nervous but excited to take part in the call.

“We are in quite a bubble here and I guess it just shows them that there’s a big wide world out there and people live differently to us,” she said.

“It’s been a collaborative project, they wanted to make a short film made by students about a day in the life of a typical Japanese student and then they asked us if we could do the same. Once you form JUthe relationship, the possibilities are endless, which is nice.”
