As the footy and netball season fast approaches, the Waroona Demons have their sights further afield to 2024, when they hope to add a women’s footy team to their club.

While the Waroona Football and Netball Club will field a men’s league, reserves and colts team this year, there is no women’s side.

Last month, they put out expressions of interest to see if they could field a women’s football team for next year’s Peel Football and Netball League season, with initial interest sparking hope to make it a reality.

Club president Rhys Bloxsidge said the club had an obligation to try to get a team up and running over the next year.

“I think we are the only team in the Peel Football and Netball League without a women’s team,” he said.

The club has already received some preliminary interest in a women’s side and hopes to increase that interest through the year.

“There is still plenty of time for next year, so we’ve got a bit of time to keep the campaign going,” Mr Bloxsidge said.

The club will need about 20 women to put their hands up for the plan to become a reality, with the commitment requirements of players likely to be dependent on what they are willing to contribute.

“You wouldn’t be focused on premierships — though that would be nice. It’s just to get women’s football going in the town and get the women having a good time at the club,” Mr Bloxsidge said.

The team would compete against clubs across the region, including Pinjarra, Halls Heads, Mandurah and Rockingham.
