Waroona Mitre 10 assistant manager turns pink following huge success of charity fundraising push
Wayne Hawkins, assistant manager of Waroona Mitre 10, has been turned pink to celebrate the store smashing its charity fundraising target.
Mr Hawkins put his hair on the line last month, saying he would dye his hair pink if the community managed to raise $1000 for the McGrath Foundation.
Not only did the Waroona community meet the target, but doubled it - drawing in more than $2000 for the charity, and getting Mr Hawkins’ hair tinted a significantly more vibrant colour.
Mr Hawkins said he was happy to put his hair on the line for what he called a “great cause”.
“It was my wife’s idea,” he said.
“She’s lost an aunty from breast cancer, so thought one way of getting money in would be to offer up my hair because normally it’s as white as can be.”
Mr Hawkins said the fundraising effort was part of a national push from the company to raise funds for the charity through October, saying Mitre 10 stores across the nation have raised about $200,000 for the McGrath Foundation.
He said while the team will be out of their pink shirts as October ends, his hair will remain the vibrant hue.
“It’s permanent, it’ll have to grow out,” he said.
“We had a hairdresser come in, Kellie from Southwest Hair Design, who offered up her time and all the products.”
Mr Hawkins said support from the community was “brilliant”.
“They were throwing $50 notes in as soon as I put my hair on the line,” he said.
“It’s really brilliant for a small community, and we’re all struggling at the minute, for them to come up with that money.”
“I would more than happily do it again.”
