Hume highway: Bus driver killed, many injured after collision with truck leaves roadway closed near Wagga

Emergency services have scrambled to respond to a horror crash after a packed buss and truck collided, killing the bus driver and leaving many with serious injuries.

Multiple passengers are being treated for a range of injuries after the crash which has closed northbound lanes of the Hume Highway south of Wagga Wagga on Saturday morning.

About 3.35am on Saturday, emergency services were called to the Hume Highway at Kyeamba, about 50km south of Wagga Wagga, following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to Riverina and Murray River police districts arrived to find a bus and a and a heavy vehicle – both travelling north – had collided.

The male driver of the bus was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

Paramedics are currently treating 13 bus passengers for a range of injuries including lacerations and one man with a suspected broken leg. Police have been told none of the injuries are life-threatening.

The driver of the truck was not injured and has been taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the cause of the crash. They are appealing for anyone with dashcam to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

All northbound lanes of the Hume Highway are closed and motorists are urged to avoid the area and monitor www.livetraffic.com for updates.
