Man accused of drugs, weapons & stealing offences to remain in Kalgoorlie-Boulder prison without bail

There were no conditions that would make bail appropriate for a man on a string of drugs, weapons and stealing charges, according to a magistrate. Damon Arthur William Sambo appeared in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Monday charged with 14 offences from incidents across Kalgoorlie-Boulder this year — the earliest dating back to April. He is yet to enter any pleas to the charges which include carrying a controlled weapon, meth possession and cannabis possession. Police prosecutor Nat Parkyn told the court Mr Sambo had failed to comply with conditions of bail each time he was released. She recounted a record in which he allegedly did not meet the conditions of his release repeatedly — racking up three breach of bail charges in less than two months. Mr Sambo told court officer Murray Stubbs who appeared on his behalf to re-apply for his bail despite warnings from Magistrate Paul Lyons that if refused, the bail application would be far more difficult to make in the future. In an application for bail, Mr Stubbs said his client had family willing to act as a surety and would be willing to report to the police as well as participate in drug testing. He said Mr Sambo admitted he had a problem and wanted to be released to attend rehab. Mr Lyons noted the court records showed Mr Sambo had been “consistently” in and out of custody since he was arrested. Mr Sambo was also charged with possession of a controlled weapon and drug paraphernalia, obstructing public officers, two counts of possessing stolen or unlawfully obtained property, and two counts of stealing. Mr Lyons said he was “positively satisfied” that there were no conditions that would make bail appropriate, telling Mr Stubbs his client needed to “crack on and deal with these charges”. Mr Sambo will remain in Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison until his next court appearance later this month.
