The mother-daughter team delivering kindness to the Waroona community with little more than rocks and paint

If you look around the parks of Waroona or near fairy doors decorating many storefronts, you might be lucky to spot a particularly colourful rock. Chances are that rock was painted by Carlene Alexander and her 11-year-old daughter Imogen, who have flooded Waroona with a sea of stylish stones. The kindness rock movement has taken many places by storm, with Mrs Alexander and Imogen excited to see the momentum building in Waroona. Mrs Alexander said they have been involved with the kindness rocks for a long time, starting when they lived in Tasmania and Imogen found her first ever rock at the age of four. “We started to take her for little bushwalks, and she found her first rock and she was hooked,” she said. Mrs Alexander said they did their first few rocks with nail polish, but over the years they have developed their skills. Today, the rocks the pair leave around town feature a stunning range of creativity. Mrs Alexander said painting her mandela rocks is one of the best ways to unwind. When the family moved from Tasmania, Imogen continued looking for more kindness rocks. “We drove across Australia and she didn’t find any, so she was quite disappointed,” Mrs Alexander said. But Imogen found her first rock in the State at the Magic Barn Fairy Garden, and she and Mrs Alexander decided it was time to break out the paint pens once more. Imogen said she finds the process of painting rocks a fun activity that allows her to chill out. “It’s really fun to make art,” she said. Imogen said knowing other people in Waroona have started getting inspired by her and her mother’s artwork makes her really happy. She was super excited when she first found rocks in local parks that she and her mother had not painted. “People have a new activity to do, rather than just sit at home and play Xbox,” Imogen said. “We’ve started to make a lot of people really happy.”
