Waroona residents gathered at the police station for a flag raising ceremony to usher in NAIDOC week

A humble group gathered at the Waroona Police station last Monday to raise the flags and march through town to celebrate the start of NAIDOC week.

Gathering at the station at 9am, Waroona Aborigonal Elders, community members and the Waroona Police raised the flags in front of the police station before being guided through town by the mounted police to a morning tea held at the Waroona Memorial Hall.

The flag raising ceremony was the first of a several cultural activities ran in Waroona last week to celebrate the week, with sports and art workshops coming to the town on Wednesday.

Shire President Mike Walmsley said the morning march was a positive experience, though this year was somewhat subdued.

He said having the mounted police patrol town vising the parks is always a highlight of the day.
