Move over Oliver and Isla — there are new baby names in town.

After five years at the top of the list of most popular names for WA newborns, Noah and Charlotte can now lay claim to a share of the crown.

The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has revealed the four names were the equal most common name given to those born in the State last year.

On the boys list, Noah moved into equal first place from second most popular in 2023, while Oliver shares the spoils to claim top spot for the 10th time in 11 years.

The two names were registered 195 times each.

For girls names, Charlotte and Isla also now share the title of most popular, with 136 registrations each.

Isla has topped the list for five years running, while Charlotte has surged from being the fourth most popular name in 2023.

Amelia was just one baby behind, with 135 girls born with that name last year.

Among those to welcome a baby Noah in 2024 was Baldivis mother Sarah Dobinson.

Within 17 minutes of arriving at Rockingham Hospital on December 4, her third child — and second son — was born.

Ms Dobinson said she knew the name wasn’t uncommon but did not expect it to be WA’s favourite.

“I knew it was popular, but I didn’t think it would be in the top five. I don’t know anyone with the name,” she said.

“I liked Noah’s meaning of rest or calm which I thought was fitting for my third child.”

Ms Dobinson’s friend Ashlee Wagener, was similarly surprised by the popularity of Charlotte, the name she gave her first child in October.

Newcomers to the top 10 list in 2024 are Oscar, Violet, Ivy and Isabella.

Isabella claimed tenth spot on the list, up from 20th place in 2023. While Isabelle also made it in this year’s list at 40th.

While royal names remained popular with WA parents — such as Charlotte, Henry, Elizabeth, George — William slipped from 10th spot to 14th.

In contrast, Harry jumped from 45th in 2023 to 27th in 2024.

Short and sweet names were also top picks, with Mia, Ava, Ella, Zoe, Jack, Max, Finn and Kai all in the top 50.

But the popularity of certain names wasn’t shared across the State.

In the Goldfield-Esperance region Ethan and Harper were the number one picks, while Mia claimed top South West girl name and Levi the most popular boys name.

There were more ties than just first place — with Matilda and Ella sharing seventh favourite girls name and Lily and Ivy drawing at ninth place. Levi and Oscar also tied for tenth in the boys list.

There were 30,825 births registered in WA in 2024.

Several of the top 50 girls’ names had nature-inspired origins, such as Lily, Rosie, Willow, Ivy, Daisy, Poppy, Hazel and Olive.

There was also a celestial bodies theme with Luna, Stella and Aurora.

Births Deaths and Marriages registrar Alison Jackson said families have 60 days from the birth of a child to lodge registration with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
