Perth Lynx captain Anneli Maley produces stunning shot to lift her team to WNBL victory over Canberra Capitals

Perth Lynx captain Anneli Maley has transformed herself into a hero after hitting the match-winning shot while under intense pressure to lift her team to a 92-90 win over Canberra Capitals at AIS Arena. The Lynx fought back from nine points down during the third quarter to record their third win of the season and Maley stood tall when it mattered. The Lynx star spoke openly about missing the match winning shot in the grand final just days before the start of this season. Maley said she wanted to look at that piece of play as one moment in time and believed the pain of that night had made her a better athlete. She seized her next opportunity to win a game with a brilliant fade away jump shot over Katie Deeble with just 1.6 seconds on the clock. “I knew I didn’t want to shoot a three but what I know I’m good at is my pull-up so I tried to get to my pull-up and it worked,” Maley explained. “I’m just trying to play in the moment. I’m just focusing on enjoying myself and enjoying the game. I’ve put in a lot of work behind the scenes that people don’t see. “People don’t see the hours I put into my shot and my body to get stronger. I’ve had a big off-season and put in a lot of time to work on the things I needed to work on.” Maley scored seven points for the night and won 10 rebounds, including two offensive boards in the last 90 seconds. Import Laeticia Amihere was brilliant for the entire night with 24 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. “She was unreal. She’s only scratching the surface of what she’s capable of which is kind of scary. She is an absolute joy to play with,” Maley said. Miela Sowah continued her strong season with 18 points. Ally Wilson and Mac Clinch Hoycard both scored 11 points while Steph Gorman made crucial shots when the team trailed during the third term and finished with nine points. The Lynx have had a tough fixture to start the season with four games in quick succession to start the season including the last two being interstate. Some teams have still only played two matches. They have started strongly despite being without co-captain Amy Atwell while she recovers from a knee injury. They now have an extended break before a home game against Sydney on November 23.
