Paying a single supplement can make the cost of travelling solo prohibitive but it remains a popular way to travel and cruise.

It’s worth keeping watch for special “solo traveller” fares that either waive or reduce the single occupancy supplement when cruise lines are looking to fill cabins.

Like the ones that caught our eye recently with big ship cruise line MSC and small ship operator Coral Expeditions. They offer vastly different holiday experiences in two very different regions of the world.

Australian line Coral Expeditions claim to be pioneers of small ship expeditions and have four decades of guided cruising experience to remote wilderness areas, including the Kimberley.

Coral has extended its sole supplement waiver on most sailings for the remainder of 2024 and on select sailings in the Kimberley in 2025.

Other itineraries in Australia included in the offer are the Tiwi Islands, Ningaloo, islands of South Australia, and a foodies voyage through Tasmania.

The international schedule includes Japan, New Zealand and the Indonesian archipelago.

“We continue to see strong growth in demand for solo travel both in Australia and abroad,” Coral Expeditions spokesman Jeff Gillies said.

“Our expedition product, our ships and our crew create a very inclusive and enjoyable community of like-minded explorers.”

MSC has savings of 50 per cent off the standard single supplement on select cruises between November 20, 2024 and January 25, 2025 in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

These include a range of value seven-night itineraries aboard MSC World Europa — one of the line’s newest ships that is powered by LNG and fuel cell technology to lower emissions — to the Mediterranean.

Barcelona, Marseille, Rome and Valletta, Malta are among the cities featured.

MSC says solo cruisers can “enjoy fantastic opportunities to make new friends and share incredible experiences with like-minded adventurers”.
